Sampling for Quality: A Comparison of Sampling Locations for Asphalt Paving Mixtures

چکیده
Each year, more than 25 percent of highway fatalities in the United States occur at or near horizontal curves, according to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). In an attempt to save lives and prevent injuries, some 30 states across the U.S. are applying high friction surfaces (HFS) to improve skid resistance at locations with a high incident of vehicle crashes such as severe horizontal curves, steep grades, roadway intersections, railroad crossings, and crosswalks. As roadway surfaces polish, available pavement friction is reduced. High friction surfaces provide improved skid resistance, and maintaining an appropriate amount of pavement friction is critical for safe driving. High friction surfaces are pavement treatments with high skid-resistant properties not typically provided by conventional materials. Through sitespecific application, a thin layer of high quality, durable aggregates is bonded to the existing pavement surface with a liquid polymer resin binder, restoring and maintaining pavement friction in areas where safe pavement surface properties are critical. These aggregate systems provide a life-saving technology customizable to specific state and local safety needs. The most commonly specified aggregate component of HFS is calcined bauxite, an aluminum ore that increases in physical hardness and stability when heated to a high temperature. Used primarily because it resists polishing, calcined bauxite retains its friction values and properties after years of wear. This aggregate is narrowly graded, passing #4 sieve and retained on #16 sieve. Aggregates must be clean and uniform in size for best results.

Occupational health risk assessment for the workers exposed to rubberized asphalt fumes
The incremental health risk for workers of the road-paving sector using rubberized asphalt was assessed based on the outcome of monitoring campaigns carried out during paving operations where both rubberized and standard asphalt were used. The exposure of workers to Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) released in the asphalt fumes were measured by means of personal samplers and dermal sampl...

متن کاملPredicting Flow Number of Asphalt Mixtures Based on the Marshall Mix design Parameters Using Multivariate Adaptive Regression Spline (MARS)
Rutting is one of the major distresses in the flexible pavements, which is heavily influenced by the asphalt mixtures properties at high temperatures. There are several methods for the characterization of the rutting resistance of asphalt mixtures. Flow number is one of the most important parameters that can be used for the evaluation of rutting. The flow number is measured by the dynamic creep...
متن کاملLiterature review of levels and determinants of exposure to potential carcinogens and other agents in the road construction industry.
Workers in the road construction industry include asphalt plant, ground construction, and road paving workers. These individuals can be exposed to a wide range of potentially hazardous substances. A summary of levels of exposure to different substances measured during road construction is presented. In modern road paving, workers typically are exposed to 0.1 to 2 mg/m3 of bitumen fume, which in...

The asphalt paving industries are faced with two major problems. These two important challenges are generated with an increase in demand for environmentally friendly paving mixtures and the problem of rapidly rising raw materials. Recycling of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) is a critical necessity to save precious aggregates and reduce the use of costly bitumen. Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) technol...
